Care Based Upon Strong Facts

I was initially trained as a pediatrician and a cardiologist. I was quite happy participating in the care of individuals. But simply became frustrated that what we were doing at the time didn’t seem to be making a difference. So I made the very conscious decision to walk away from a very comfortable clinical career to learn research techniques with a hope that new discoveries would bring new opportunities for care that were based upon strong facts. That incentive to improve the length and quality of life for the people I care about and for the people I care for is never ending. It’s the reason I get out of bed early in the morning and the reason I am in the hospital and lab late at night. Behind every research question and every research victory there is a particular patient name, patient face and patient story that provided the motivation and more importantly the inspiration to do the work in the first place.
